Q#131: How do you protect a food garden from a hurricane?

This popped into my head when a storm rolled in pretty hard and violently around 4:30 this morning. I laid there, thinking it was gonna be bad for a little bit, but got worse and worse. I'd just set out the last of my seeds and trays in the seed greenhouses last night before coming … Continue reading Q#131: How do you protect a food garden from a hurricane?

Amazing how a grocery chain can enact an emergency plan & have it’s sh** together long before the government even starts to…

I have an H-E-B grocery about a dozen miles from my place. I went there on an errand when this whole mess was shutting things down (in the first waves of the Toilet Paper Wars, too). Things were orderly, and I wrote about it last week, so I won't rehash the whole weird day. I'll … Continue reading Amazing how a grocery chain can enact an emergency plan & have it’s sh** together long before the government even starts to…

Lawson Craddock, or, a Houston athlete who made promises & kept on going…

I heard a little about this, but thanks to clearing out my house and trying to get my brain back on track and life moving on, I hadn't paid much if any attention to the news in a week. So, I missed this gem from a few days ago. Lawson Craddock I heard was from … Continue reading Lawson Craddock, or, a Houston athlete who made promises & kept on going…

The Harvey Diaries (Pt 3, 8/31/17): Isolation & Guilt from a Not-as-Affected Houston-Area Resident

Any other Harvey-related news and info that I decide to post will be in real-time, not retro. This post is partially edited for privacy reasons. Part 1 (of 3) … Continue reading The Harvey Diaries (Pt 3, 8/31/17): Isolation & Guilt from a Not-as-Affected Houston-Area Resident

The Harvey Diaries (Pt 2, 8/30/17): Isolation & Guilt from a Not-as-Affected Houston-area Resident

I woke up after some restless sleep. I’m annoyed and a little freaked out because I heard that wind and rain getting worse (or maybe it was the wind shaking the rain out of the trees, I can’t be sure—no news or Doppler to speak of, dammit). Either way, I had some morbid half-asleep dreams...

2 days cut off from the outside world (thanks, Harvey) and I haven’t hung myself. Guess I’m not an internet addict…?

The landlines have been out since mid-Sunday. The power was out for about 16 hours and flickered a bit. My cellphone sucks and barely gets texts unless I turn it toward the window just right in not-so-windy weather (which cuts off calls, too). The cable was gone for two days, the Internet for nearly three. … Continue reading 2 days cut off from the outside world (thanks, Harvey) and I haven’t hung myself. I’m Waiting for the Storm to Come: Harvey’s knocking down south… so far.

I'm a weatherbug. I'm the weirdo with a 35mm camera hoping to get great lightning shots in one click and waste a whole roll of film trying. I wanted to film hurricanes and tornadoes. I watched Twister and wanted to be a storm chaser when I grew up. Actually, the movie made me want to … Continue reading I’m Waiting for the Storm to Come: Harvey’s knocking down south… so far.
