I first saw this last night before I was closing up and showed a teacher who was with me. Our jaws dropped and my co-worker was nearly apoplectic. I can’t blame her.
When it comes to Halloween, don’t get me wrong: I might lean liberal, but I don’t clutch my pearls over bad taste or overly sexy costumes. I also don’t chastise comics or comedians for jokes that make fun of people or paint a broad brush and try to school comedians like Jerry Seinfeld (of all the comedians, really?) whose comedy to emulate so it doesn’t offend anybody.
Those are b.s. arguments. There’s humor and the comedians have that shtick. Halloween can go the range between funny, cute/sexy, scary, or bland (you know, the cheapskates or Debbie Downers trying to convince everybody Halloween’s stupid).
But what these teachers have done in Idaho with their Halloween costumes…at an ELEMENTARY school… I’ve got a big problem with that.
If Halloween’s supposed to be funny, cute/sexy, or scary… then these costumes are a fail of epic proportions.
Again, I do my best not to be a stick in the mud, but I can’t find anything funny about this. It’s definitely not cute (even if the letters making up the words “Make America Great Again” look like they’re put up with those colorful cut-out classroom letters). It’s not really scary, either.
That’s the best word I can come up with for it. Pathetic and dumb.
Because who were they trying to entertain here?
Elementary kids don’t watch the news. What news they get comes from “Mommy thinks…” or “Daddy thinks…”, or whatever said parents are yelling back at the radio on the way to school or the store.
That’s about it.
What would a little kid find funny about a wall, even one with funky-cut, colorful letters on it?
The kids would probably laugh at the sombreros, ponchos, and maracas…but that’s about it.
Why the wall, too?
Who the hell came up with this idea? And the dozen elementary teachers in these photos… why the hell did they think this was a good idea?
I’m not “clutching my pearls,” if you’re wondering. I’m saddened and just plain baffled at these teachers and their thought process. Who the hell thought this was a good idea and why?
Floor’s yours, because this is confusing and disheartening and I can’t figure it out.
